The feed was consumed by France burning: the Limoges town hall collapsing in flames, Galeries Lafayette looted, Joan of Arc scaled, Macron at a Celine Dion concert while Paris filled with smoke and Palestinian flags @koshercockney @visegrad24 @AutismCapital @Anglo_Futurist. Around that, the AI trade wobbled — Oracle's CDS blowing out and a weekend Hyperliquid crash @zerohedge @HandsomeBear — and Australia's Digital Duty of Care fight kept grinding @shellenberger @PaulineHansonOz. The mood was grimly entertained: everyone knew the jokes wrote themselves, and made them anyway.
The image that travelled furthest was Limoges. @koshercockney posted the moment "The tower roof of the 143-year-old Limoges Town Hall collapses." Al Arabiya's account, passed on by @zerohedge, put the cause as riots over the cost of living and the state of education in France.
The rest of the night came in clips. @confrontfr, from Marseille: "JE NE PEUX PAS DÉCRIRE CE QUE JE VIENS DE VIVRE À MARSEILLE." @disclosetv had a rioter climbing the Joan of Arc statue at Place des Pyramides. Looting of the Galeries Lafayette was posted from Bordeaux @gtylgrn2 and, by @visegrad24, from Paris. @visegrad24 also had rioters trying to storm Opéra Garnier and Dior bringing its own security @AutismCapital. @AutismCapital's captions were "The warmth of collectivism." and "Dior army doing more resistance than the French police." @AutismCapital
@Anglo_Futurist's "What a photo" showed flares and Palestinian flags with the Eiffel Tower behind. @zerohedge ran "Has France Fallen?" The other thread was Macron at a Celine Dion concert, which @AutismCapital called "You couldn't have written this better."
The mainstream line is that students are protesting school underfunding. @shellenberger rejected it with a chart: France spends "between two and 200 times more per student" than the countries its migrants come from. He blames a "Left-Islamist" alliance. @AvidCommentator had the same instinct, minus the chart: "you can really see how this is about students having air conditioning in school..."
@nic_carter came at it from the budget side. France is "maxed out", with public spending at 57.2% of GDP and a 10-year bond yielding more than Italy's or Greece's, so "it's not about public spending." His later take was that two postwar pillars are colliding, immigration and protecting pensions. Young natives and immigrants are being asked to feed "boomer luxury communism", and the newcomers aren't "bought in" to the French social contract. He attached a table of net fiscal contributions by origin. @nic_carter
@JohnPapola put both sides in one post: the French "didn't want barbarian hordes" but do want "a progressive welfare state that is completely unsustainable." @dhh went with immigration alone: "Mass immigration has been a catastrophe for Europe."
Michael Shellenberger's fight with Communications Minister Anika Wells is the loudest version of a week-long argument about Labor's Digital Duty of Care bill. He told his followers that Wells and @AlboMP "hate the public doing the fact-checking through @CommunityNotes" and want Labor ideologues to decide the truth for the whole internet "like Big Brother". @shellenberger The thread was a reply to @ellymelly's post taking apart Wells's National Press Club line about a billionaire stripping a platform of moderation. @shellenberger
News24 ran the story that Shellenberger told a Labor-staff meeting that left him feeling like he "was in Soviet Russia". @News24Aust
@ausvstheagenda set Wells's 2019 complaints about restricted free speech against her "Fuck your free speech." of 15 October 2026. @goodfoodgal: "We are paying this corrupt, grifting politician to take away our freedom of speech." Pauline Hanson called the bill unfixable, with her chief of staff explaining why, in a clip that has the government set to back down on ministerial discretion. @PaulineHansonOz
@zerohedge says Oracle was "the first domino to fall" in the AI-trade unwind. Its CDS hit 300bps, up from 75bps last November. "This is just the start." The linked piece says Barclays downgraded Oracle's debt to sell, arguing it "would run out of cash by the November 2026 quarter." @zerohedge Elsewhere @zerohedge pointed to Goldman seeing AI capitulation as hedge fund gains evaporate.
Then the weekend. @HandsomeBear: "$MU hyperliquid just went through the floor". His chart shows MU at $826.97, down 5.62%. @ThinkingUSD saw the same drop: "They're so nervous they're raping it on the weekend". @dgt10011 said the xyz pairs were signalling something: "Might be an ugly Monday" and "Wall Street totally unaware".
On the sentiment side, @fejau_inc shared a clip of Brad Gerstner talking bullish on AI while his exposure was at its lowest in three years, with "Welcome to the thunderdome baby".
