Morning edition, Tuesday 20 October

A heavy, jittery session: French riots metastasized into curfews, bond blowouts and a Louvre closure, while AI credit stress (CoreWeave, Nvidia CDS, Goldman's flip) dominated the market talk. The mood swung between gallows humour about 'Black Monday' that never came @fejau_inc and genuine unease at the K-shaped credit chart @zerohedge. Away from that, the feed's attention kept snapping back to the shopkeeper with the shattered window @shellenberger and the meme it spawned @AutismCapital.

France brings in curfews as spreads widen and the Louvre shuts

The state has now reacted. @BBCBreaking reported overnight curfews for parts of central Paris and other cities, starting at 23:00 in the capital, with youth-specific restrictions from 21:00 in Nice. @zerohedge's version had 8PM curfews, an interior minister admitting police "Lost Control", and Macron "Flees To The Gulf". The BBC and ZeroHedge don't agree on the hour.

The Louvre said that "due to student strikes the museum is currently closed" @MuseeLouvre. @AutismCapital's reaction: "They shut down the Louvre. Wow."

Markets moved too. @jsblokland had the French spread at 146 basis points after the weekend. @zerohedge later had it at 148bps, with the 10Y up 16bps to 4.94%, the biggest one-day jump since March 2025. @themarketear noted the French 10-year now yields 35bp above Italy's: "Let that sink in."

The begging shopkeeper becomes the riots' defining image, and a parable

@shellenberger picked the "widely shared video of a young blond French shopkeeper who begged the rioters to spare her store", pushed aside as her face crumpled, as the image of the weekend. He pinned the failure on the Left's "war on the police".

The parable came via a post by @rosewdc, quoted by @AutismCapital. It says she is a left-wing activist who stood in her boutique telling the looters she had defended their right to stay in France, and was spat on and trampled for it. The card has no independent confirmation of those details. @nic_carter's verdict: "She's still gonna be a lib after this".

@AutismCapital's moral was that "appeasing a crocodile hoping it eats you last" still ends with you being eaten. His joke version was Vermeer's "The Girl with the Suicidal Empathy", which went big @AutismCapital. @knutsvanholm paired her photo with the same painting: "Which way, western woman?"

Michael Shellenberger@shellenbergerTue 5:02am
France did its best to prevent the riots, say the media. But it dramatically underestimated the number of protesters and failed to send out enough officers and armored vehicles. Behind all those specific failures was, as in the US, the anti-civilization Left's war on the police.
The image is a screenshot of an article by Michael Shellenberger titled 'Decades Of The Left Demonizing Police Behind Macron’s Failure To Prevent The Riots.' Below the headline are three photos: Jean-Luc Mélenchon raising a fist, masked protesters near a fire, and a historical black-and-white photo

If one had to choose from the many powerful images of the French riots on Saturday, it would have to be the widely shared video of a young blond French shopkeeper who begged the rioters to spare her store, was pushed aside, and watched them loot it, her face crumpling in sadness and despair. She wasn’t alone. Other media reported on store owners “pleading with thugs to leave their stores” and shopkeepers “sitting in front of their businesses in tears.” Faced with shocking videos that quickly spread worldwide, defenders of French
… show more President Emmanuel Macron and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez say they are not to blame. Everyone was surprised and caught off guard by the sheer number of protesters and rioters who looted stores, burned buildings and invaded city halls. Macron had repeatedly urged protesters not to use violence, which he reiterated on Sunday night. He promised that “those who destroyed must pay,” that “those who looted must reimburse,” and that “those who sought to bring down the Republic will have to answer for it.” And because the riots were not the government’s fault, it was only logical for Macron to reject Nuñez’s offer to resign after the weekend’s mayhem. But Macron and his government knew for weeks that the CGT, the nation’s largest union confederation, and the student unions had planned a massive protest for October 17, and failed to do what was needed to protect the public. He and the French intelligence community drastically underestimated the crowd size. The day before the marches, the Interior Ministry expected 40,000 to 60,000 demonstrators in Paris and about 100,000 in the rest of the country. Instead, roughly 550,000 turned out, including 110,000 in Paris. As a result, the government deployed far too few police and other security forces, just 60,000. They deployed few Centaure armored vehicles or RAID tactical units in advance. Nobody should have been surprised. France’s intelligence services told top officials in a government crisis meeting on October 1 that the school movement behind the riots was “an operation organised by LFI (France Unbowed) and its proxies on the far left.”... This needs to be a wake up call to many people in the West. Specifically liberal white activists. If you think you’re an “ally” and that protects you, it doesn’t. When the mob is mobilized, the mob wants blood. It doesn’t matter who it’s from. They will turn on you in a moment. Remember that “appeasing a crocodile hoping it eats you last” still ends with you being eaten. You’re not protecting yourself by aligning with the bully. The bully will use you until they don’t need you and then

Goldman upgrades CoreWeave to Buy at a lower target; Nvidia CDS hits wides

Goldman's CoreWeave move is an upgrade to Buy from Neutral with the price target cut to $106 from $139 @zerohedge. @zerohedge filed it under "Wall Street in full-blown defense mode", next to JPM upgrading Intel. Its reaction was "Gonna need a bigger upgrade" over a chart of a spike and a fade, then "CRWV LOD" @zerohedge @zerohedge.

@goodalexander read the note more kindly. Goldman sees per-unit economics improving, with short-term contracts signed at $40mn/MW against roughly $10mn/MW blended today. The same note puts CoreWeave's cost of debt at 800-900bps and says it should still be able to finance expansion at a cost only modestly higher @goodalexander.

The stress has moved up the quality ladder. @zerohedge posted Nvidia and Broadcom CDS at all-time wides, Broadcom at 142.78 and Nvidia at 96.05.

3. Our ulIRR math suggests that CoreWeave should clear a 15% ulIRR for at least the next 24 months. CoreWeave’s blended monetization today is ~$10mn/MW, based on ARR/prior period active power (to account for timing of capacity coming online). We believe this should increase: CoreWeave has disclosed short-term contracts (3-6months) are signed at $40mn/MW, and has raised prices by 25% in July and another 10% in October. We expect these pricing benefits to flow through to consolidated ARR/MW more gradually than at peers that predominantly offer spot or on-demand compute, given the longer-dated nature of CoreWeave’s contracts (with average contract length ~4-5 years), but nonetheless expect monetization per MW to continue trending higher driven by three factors: 1) new generations of GPUs should command higher pricing, though this is likely the least value accretive driver given it is accompanied by higher capex per MW; 2) continued supply-demand tightness across the AI infrastructure market. Notably, contracts signed in 2Q carried contribution margins 5-10 points above more recent cohorts (recall CoreWeave targets mid-20% contribution margins); and 3) we see an increasing contribution from higher-margin software and platform offerings, including managed inference and Omni (discussed above). As these services become a larger portion of the revenue mix, they should increase revenue generated per MW without a commensurate increase in underlying infrastructure investment, supporting higher ARR/MW and incremental returns on deployed capital. Taken together, our industry conversations with customers and competitors suggests $13mn/MW is an appropriate starting assumption for new longer-term contracts coming online. Exhibit 3: Our illustrative CRWV contract suggests that ulIRR could be 15%, before adjusting for residual value Source: Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research
The image displays a text excerpt from a financial report discussing CoreWeave's debt financing strategies, specifically focusing on DDTLs and interest expenses. A specific sentence regarding capturing residual value after debt repayment is underlined for emphasis.
text in image
2. Our conversations with credit specialists suggest that CoreWeave should still be able to finance its future expansion plans at a cost of debt that is only modestly higher than its current weighted average cost of debt. Simplistically, we calculate current weighted average cost of debt at 800-900bps, given $640mn of 2Q interest expense (annualized to $2.56bn) divided by ~$30bn of total debt (average in 1H). We see a scenario where new IG-related debt prices closer to 750bps (SOFR+300) and HY-related debt prices closer to 1050bps (SOFR+600). Based on our industry conversations, CoreWeave will still likely be able to raise DDTLs; and DDTL 5.0 and 5.5 both trade at or above their originally issued discount. Recall CoreWeave's primary funding method for scaling AI infrastructure is via DDTLs (delayed draw term loans) - these are asset-backed project financings rather than traditional corporate debt. Rather than underwriting CoreWeave's standalone credit profile, lenders are primarily underwriting the combination of a specific long-term customer contract, the underlying GPU infrastructure, and the cash flows generated by that deployment. These facilities are typically secured by the associated GPUs, servers, contract revenues, and related assets, allowing lenders to leverage the credit quality of the end customer in addition to the collateral value of the infrastructure itself. The structures have historically been largely self-amortizing, with debt maturities designed to align with contract terms so that customer payments repay principal over the life of the agreement. As a result, by the time the contract expires, the associated debt has often been substantially or fully repaid, leaving CoreWeave to capture any residual value from the GPU fleet or potential re-leasing opportunities without the burden of ongoing interest expense. More recent transactions, particularly DDTL 5.5, represent an evolution of the model, as lenders appear increasingly active in underwriting not only contracted cash flows but also the future re-contracting potential and residual value of NVIDIA GPU infrastructure, effectively extending financing beyond the duration of the initial customer agreement.

Strive's $630m IPO lands as the market dumps

@ColeMacro relayed Strive's update: 1,223 BTC bought last Wednesday to Friday at an average $81,734, taking holdings to ₿36,818. The SATS IPO proceeds settle Tuesday, the 18-month dividend reserve stays, and the traditional warrants have expired. @Werkman put the week's total at 4,045 BTC.

I dont think a lot people truly grasp how much social mobility in terms of housing has been absolutely decimated. In 1999, you could afford to buy a median house in every capital but Sydney on a median household income, in some cases absurdly easily. Today, a place like Albury is unaffordable and in price to income terms is roughly in the same ballpark as California. When the time comes that the proverbial Bolsheviks rise up, in a stable and prosperous society, only a fraction of the population joins them. This is part of why I bang on about relative outcomes by age demographics and people having a stake in society. Because if people have a stake and an even somewhat credible pathway to achieve what they want in life, they have something to lose. But when you have a situation where: - A run of the mill home costs ~9x median household income - The private sector per capita economy
… show more has grown by less than 1% in the last 14 years cumulatively - There are hugely disparate outcomes in real wages and household consumption growth by age demographic You have a long term recipe for a fraying of the social fabric and in the long term civil strife. People should not confuse legendary Australian apathy with the idea that things aren't deteriorating here too.

I once sold a truck to a guy who called and agreed to pay full price as long as I brought it to the airport within the hour. It was incredibly sus, but my truck had been for sale for months, and I had grown desperate. So I went. It only got weirder. He had bought a one way plane ticket to come buy a different one, but had been ghosted by the seller when he landed. He was stranded at an airport on the other side of the country with no other plan. So I thought, “well maybe I know the guy who ghosted him. Let me see if I can help.” I asked to see his phone to read his FB Marketplace message with the seller. He had been talking to some guy with Broken English and a vaguely middle eastern sounding name for several days now. The guy was selling an incredibly desirable truck for 30% below market. A virtually impossible deal. The vehicular equivalent of a horny singles in your area add on a porn site. He turned to me and said “y’know, his listing says the truck is about an hour from here, maybe I should go look for him.” I said “bro I’m looking at his profile, he has this same truck listed in every city in North America. The plate in the photos isn’t even from our state. This truck is spammed hundreds of times across marketplace.” To which he replied, “yeah I thought that was weird. I think it’s a glitch.” “No it’s not a glitch… you didn’t send him money did you?” I asked, fearing the answer. “Yeah I sent him a money, otherwise he was gonna sell it to another guy.” I winced. “how much?” “Five thousand bucks.” “……okay.” “Well let’s look him up, we have his name.” He replies confidently. “Look him up where?” I ask. “Facebook” “I’m looking at his Facebook. It’s not real.” Just then we arrive at the bank, he parks my 2500HD in the handicap spot at a 45 degree angle. I say maybe we should pick a different spot, he tells me he isn’t picky. We set up the wire transfer, he makes a disparaging remark about brown people to the teller. She frowns, she is brown. The money luckily still gets sent. And he takes off in the truck. Hours later he calls me from the middle of nowhere. He had decided to fuck with the aftermarket tuner while driving and bricked it. He was stranded. Anthropic was so bottleneck'd by GitHub that they rebuilt git itself. This might seem insane, but a lot of us are gonna end up where they are today.

New on our Engineering blog: Creating in-house source control. In May, we merged around 2,500 code changes per day. In September, we merged more than 30,000 per day. As a result, we became bottlenecked by developer infrastructure built for human (rather than agent) scale. Here, we share how we built a new version control system—and fully migrated our monorepo from git—in five months: anthropic.com/engineering/redesigning-source-con

A viral claim that a mobile game rigs puzzles to kill you — now allegedly confirmed by decompiling the app.

↪ @tracewoodgrains: Claims: Game detects “ad whales,” then periodically gives them smooth runs until they barely beat their high scores. Right at that point, it kills them deliber…
@tracewoodgrains Sounds kinda fake, I'd wait for independent confirmation. Also why does he spell the game name wrong in the tweet?
I didn't believe the video when I saw it yesterday because it lacked technical details in addition to being too attention grabbing. But today I had Claude take apart the Android version of the game for me; Everything OP says is true. There are lots of manipulations but the key one here involves what the code calls offer type ZHI_SI_TI (致死题, "lethal puzzle") or alternatively "algo_must_death". The game generates puzzle pieces in sets of three, and has different algorithms that swap how the pieces are selected. Generators have behaviors like "random", "hard", "fill
… show more gaps" (to help player), "random but guaranteed not to kill you", etc. If a given algo fails to find a solution it passes to the next algo in an active set. The "lethal puzzle" generator considers every possible move with a given set of three pieces, then only emits them if the number of placement possibilities is 0 (no solution, guaranteed death). This is activated in several situations, one apparently being that the app thinks your current play session is a little slow, and they want you to not get bored so they kill it early to start a new one. What the video doesn't explain is the context. In the game, "rewarded" ads are ads you get some game reward for watching. The main reward is a revive/continue; If you get into an unwinnable state you can watch an ad to keep playing. You usually only get one revive per game but there are a bunch of server-activated properties to modify this constraint. The policy at play here is that, if you're a high-value player, and there's a high-value ad queued for you, and you're in a play session nearing your high score, the game puts "lethal puzzle" to the top of the piece generator list to rig the game to fail, right when you're most likely to be highly engaged and watching the ad on the revive screen. It doesn't end there though; The game remembers if the last game ended due to a hand dealt by ZHI_SI_TI, and triggers FatalPuzzleDeathCompensationTrait, which takes the edge off by letting you carry over your combo count from the previous session. Like everything else this compensate-after-we-killled-you trait is an A/B feature controlled by the server. It's manipulations all the way down; there's like 5% actual game code and the rest is literally hundreds of remotely controlled toggles to control the game state for maximum engagement.

this post announced what could be the largest commitment of philanthropic capital ever made ($200 billion if Anthropic goes public at $1 trillion, which is probably conservative) the first reply I saw asked if Anthropic was going to use it for “gay race communism”
We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit. It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion. In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating

it'd be interesting if si produced some sort of an economy where private corporations become the primary financiers of social welfare (aka universal high income) rather than governments. i know indirectly this is what happens through taxes but imagine it working directly in some fashion (likely through ownership, growth, & some form of liquidity). the reason why is because it's pretty clear now that si will create super power law outcomes for almost all of society. & more specifically current mechanics for income redistribution like income taxes will become way less
… show more effective over time too since the income gaps will continue to increase drastically (see sf & its housing market as an early example of this). basically some form universal equity ownership as an intermediate step before full automation occurs. fun to think about all of the implications of this.

Important observation given that Warsh said he wants to "stay in his lane" regarding fiscal...but👇 proves THE single biggest swing factor in fiscal is Warsh's rate hike decisions. Warsh is either operating under a misapprehension or lying to himself (& therefore to all of us):
A more useful observation is that rate hikes now have a large, direct fiscal price tag. This does not reduce "fiscal capacity" (which is about the ability to meet payment obligations of any size) but "fiscal space" (which is about inflation risk associated with making those payments). The right question: Is the stream of interest payments inflationary, given who receives the interest as income?
